Belly Dance (also known as Arab dance) is a dance that combines traditional elements from the Middle East and joins them with others from North Africa. In Arabic, it is known as raqs sharqi “رقص شرقي “(dance of the east or oriental dance.) Also it also called on occasions raqs baladi رقص بلدي (national or folk dance.) Raqs baladi is a very basic dance, with hardly any movement, minus the hips The evolution of this dance is called belly dance or raqs sharqi in Egypt.
Raqs sharqi includes movements of Egyptian folklore, classical and contemporary dance, turns, large movements that incorporate the entire bodybut it’s focused is on the hips. In turkey, belly dance is known as gobek bdans or rakasse (Turkish rhythm.)
